About
Stefano Pastorelli is a prominent robotics researcher whose work spans collaborative robotics, human-robot interaction, precision agriculture automation, and wearable motion sensing. Based at the intersection of mechanical engineering and intelligent systems, Pastorelli has made substantial contributions to making robots safer and more effective partners for human workers in industrial environments. Among his most celebrated achievements is his development of vision-based collision avoidance systems for collaborative robots, work that has garnered nearly 100 citations across multiple studies and directly addresses one of the field's most pressing safety challenges. His human-robot handover framework and practical collaborative assembly layouts have similarly shaped how researchers and engineers approach shared-workspace robotics. Earlier in his career, Pastorelli pioneered the WiRo-6.3, a novel six-degree-of-freedom wire-actuated parallel robot, demonstrating his long-standing interest in unconventional robotic architectures. More recently, his research has embraced Industry 4.0 themes, employing inertial measurement units and sensor fusion techniques to track human upper limb motion in real time, enabling robots to anticipate and respond to worker movements intelligently. His 2020 design of the solar-powered agricultural UGV "Agri.q" further illustrates his versatility. With over 350 cumulative citations, Pastorelli's body of work continues to meaningfully advance both industrial and field robotics.
