About
Jin-Yeong Park is a pioneering robotics engineer whose career has centered on the design, development, and deployment of multi-legged underwater robots capable of operating in some of the ocean's most challenging environments. Working primarily through the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), Park has been instrumental in advancing seabed walking robotics as a viable alternative to conventional underwater propulsion systems such as screws and caterpillar tracks. Park's most celebrated contribution is the Crabster CR200, a six-legged underwater walking robot engineered to navigate high tidal currents and turbid waters — conditions that defeat traditional remotely operated vehicles. Introduced conceptually in 2011 (52 citations) and rigorously developed through successive papers on its mechanics, walking and swimming algorithms, and real-world field trials, the CR200 has been successfully deployed for marine archaeological surveys along Korea's culturally rich western coastline. Park further extended this platform by integrating high-resolution scanning sonar to overcome poor underwater visibility, and later advanced the concept to deep-sea depths with the CR6000, rated to 6,000 meters. With a body of work accumulating over 160 citations, Park's research has meaningfully shaped underwater robotics, demonstrating that biomimetic locomotion offers compelling advantages for seabed exploration, cultural heritage surveys, and harsh-environment marine operations.
