About
Sea-Moon Kim is a leading figure in the development of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) systems for deep-sea exploration and emergency response. His research focuses on hybrid navigation and control architectures for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), with a particular emphasis on enhancing operational reliability in harsh marine environments. Kim’s most cited work, the 2006 paper on the “HEMIRE” deep-sea UUV (13 citations), introduced a pioneering hybrid navigation system integrating a strap-down inertial measurement unit (IMU) for precise positioning, guidance, and control—a foundational contribution to deep-sea robotics. More recently, his 2024 study on multiple AUVs for rapid underwater investigation (2 citations) addresses a critical real-world need: after the 2019 helicopter crash off Dokdo Island, Kim helped design a system of four small side-scan sonar AUVs and a mid-sized AUV to enable swift, coordinated surveys in challenging conditions.
