Sea-Moon Kim is a leading figure in the development of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) systems for deep-sea exploration and emergency response. His research focuses on hybrid navigation and control architectures for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), with a particular emphasis on enhancing operational reliability in harsh marine environments. Kim’s most cited work, the 2006 paper on the “HEMIRE” deep-sea UUV (13 citations), introduced a pioneering hybrid navigation system integrating a strap-down inertial measurement unit (IMU) for precise positioning, guidance, and control—a foundational contribution to deep-sea robotics.
