About

Oleg Ivlev is a pioneering robotics researcher whose work spans rehabilitation robotics, assistive technology, and compliant robotic systems, with a particular focus on improving quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities. Based at the Institute of Automation at the University of Bremen, Ivlev has been a central figure in the long-running FRIEND project — a series of intelligent wheelchair-mounted robotic systems designed to assist persons with upper limb impairments. His foundational 2001 paper introducing the FRIEND system has accumulated 92 citations, while subsequent work on FRIEND II (67 citations) demonstrated his commitment to iterative, human-centered design spanning nearly two decades. Beyond assistive robotics, Ivlev made significant contributions to the field of soft robotics through his development of innovative pneumatic actuators featuring rotary elastic chambers (REC). These compliant, inherently safe mechanisms, detailed across several well-cited publications, address critical challenges in physical human-robot interaction, particularly for rehabilitation and orthotic devices. His 2012 overview of flexible fluidic actuators (47 citations) helped consolidate this emerging field. With research bridging hardware innovation, adaptive control strategies, and real-world clinical application, Ivlev's body of work remains highly relevant to researchers developing the next generation of safe, effective rehabilitation and assistive robots.
