About

Dr. Libo Song is a pioneering robotics researcher whose work spans path planning, kinematics, modular design, and engineering education. His most influential contribution, the 2004 paper on soccer robot path planning (47 citations), revolutionized the artificial potential field (APF) approach by integrating simulated annealing to overcome the local minima and GNRON (Goals Nonreachable with Obstacles Nearby) problems—a critical advancement for autonomous navigation. That same year, his work on RBF networks-based inverse kinematics for 6R manipulators (43 citations) provided an efficient solution for complex robotic arm control. Dr. Song also made significant strides in climbing robotics, designing a modular mobile robot with magnetic wheels (14 citations) capable of inspecting vertical steel walls for weld seams. Beyond technical innovation, he co-founded the IDC Robocon competition (12 citations), a transnational teaming challenge that has become a transformative project-based design experience for undergraduate engineering students worldwide. His research further explores automatic dynamics generation for modular reconfigurable robots, biped ice-skater robots, and nonholonomic constraint effects on leg-wheeled hybrid platforms. With over 140 total citations, Dr. Song’s work bridges theoretical robotics with practical, educational impact.
