About

Taeyeon Kim is a pioneering roboticist whose work spans the extremes of autonomy—from subterranean search-and-rescue to soft wearable rehabilitation. As a key member of TEAM CoSTAR in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, Kim contributed to the development of algorithms and systems that enabled robots to navigate GPS-denied, perceptually-degraded environments, a body of work culminating in the highly cited "NeBula" paper (105 citations). Kim’s research is defined by a dual focus: pushing the boundaries of multi-robot autonomy in challenging terrains, and advancing human-robot interaction through bio-inspired, soft wearable robots. Notable contributions include the BAXTER bi-modal aerial-terrestrial vehicle for long-endurance versatility, and the design of compact cable-driven series elastic actuators for ankle assistance, demonstrating impact in both field robotics and medical applications. Kim has also pioneered the use of artificial neural networks to predict ground reaction forces from composite ankle springs, and has explored the integration of large language models for autonomous navigation in marine and underwater domains. With a career marked by innovation in perception, control, and human-centric design, Taeyeon Kim is shaping the future of robots that can explore the unknown and assist the human body.
