About
S.R. Pandian is a robotics and automation researcher whose work spans high-speed robotic systems, pneumatic actuation, underwater robotics, and cloud-connected autonomous systems. He is perhaps best known for his landmark contribution to the FALCON robot — a wire-driven parallel manipulator capable of peak accelerations of 43G — which has garnered over 324 citations and remains a benchmark in ultra-high-speed robotic design. His influential 1997 work on sliding mode control for pneumatic actuators (93 citations) addressed the longstanding challenges of nonlinearity, compressibility, and payload variation in pneumatic systems, offering practical solutions that moved the field forward significantly. Pandian has consistently pushed the boundaries of pneumatic actuation, investigating air motors as viable alternatives to electric motors and pioneering hybrid pneumatic/electric motor systems for improved control performance. His research later expanded into underwater robot manipulators, where he applied model-based sliding mode and neuro-fuzzy control strategies to enable autonomous underwater operations. More recently, Pandian has embraced cloud robotics and STEAM education, developing affordable robotic platforms to promote active, student-centered learning in developing countries. Across more than two decades, his interdisciplinary contributions reflect a sustained commitment to bridging advanced control theory with real-world robotic applications.
