About
Jan Rosell is a prominent robotics researcher whose work spans robot motion planning, autonomous manipulation, and knowledge-based robotics. Based at the Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC-UPC), he has made foundational contributions to some of the most challenging problems in modern robotics, earning well over 600 citations across his most influential publications alone. Rosell's research is perhaps best known for tackling the complex intersection of motion planning and manipulation. His work on randomized physics-based motion planning for grasping in cluttered environments (94 citations) introduced innovative approaches for scenarios where straightforward collision-free paths simply don't exist. Complementing this, his integrated grasp and motion planning framework elegantly unified traditionally separate planning stages into a single cohesive process. A strong advocate for human-inspired robotics, Rosell has extensively explored human-likeness in dual-arm robotic systems, leveraging demonstrated human movements and postural synergies to generate natural, efficient robot behavior. His ontology-based review of approaches to robot autonomy (120 citations) and the PMK knowledge processing framework reflect his growing influence in semantic and knowledge-driven robotics. Rosell also created the Kautham Project (71 citations), a widely adopted open-source teaching and research platform for motion planning, demonstrating his commitment to both advancing the field and nurturing the next generation of robotics researchers.
