About
Gianmarco Veruggio is a pioneering Italian roboticist whose work spans two distinctive but complementary domains: underwater robotics and the ethical dimensions of intelligent machines. At the Italian National Research Council, he led the development of groundbreaking marine robotic systems, including AMADEUS, a dexterous subsea manipulator hand using fluid-filled tentacle fingers for deep-water sampling (131 citations), and SESAMO, an autonomous surface craft designed to study sea-air interactions during Antarctic expeditions (128 citations). His ROMEO project further advanced remotely operated vehicle capabilities for scientific and autonomous underwater applications. Veruggio is perhaps best known, however, as the founder of roboethics — a field he helped formally establish through the landmark EURON Roboethics Roadmap (2006, 131 citations), which emerged from a landmark international atelier in Genoa. His subsequent publications on the social and ethical implications of robotics have accumulated hundreds of citations across multiple venues, demonstrating the enduring relevance of his framework.
