Gil-Whoan Chu is a pioneering researcher in the field of industrial wearable robotics, with a primary focus on augmenting human strength for heavy manufacturing tasks. His most significant contributions lie in developing wearable robots specifically designed for the shipbuilding industry, where workers routinely handle massive, heavy components in challenging environments. Chu's landmark 2014 study, "The experiments of wearable robot for carrying heavy-weight objects of shipbuilding works" (23 citations), introduced two distinct actuation mechanisms—direct electric motor drive and electro-hydraulic actuation—to assess their applicability for real-world shipyard use. This work laid the foundation for practical exoskeletons that can reduce worker fatigue and injury risk.
