About
S. Nicosia is a pioneering robotics and control systems researcher whose career has been defined by foundational contributions to robot dynamics, state estimation, and adaptive control. Working primarily from the 1980s through the 2000s, Nicosia made landmark advances in the observation and control of both rigid and flexible-joint robot manipulators — mechanical systems whose complex, highly nonlinear dynamics posed formidable challenges to the control community. His most celebrated contribution, "Robot Control by Using Only Joint Position Measurements" (1990), has accumulated over 420 citations and introduced an elegant observer that reconstructs joint velocities by exploiting the structural properties of robot dynamics — a practically transformative result given the cost and noise sensitivity of velocity sensors.
