About
Jeongae Bak is a pioneering roboticist whose research centers on bio-inspired locomotion and advanced underwater robotics. Her most celebrated contribution is the variable-stiffness–morphing wheel, inspired by the surface tension of a liquid droplet, which enables robots to seamlessly transition from efficient flat-ground travel to obstacle climbing—a breakthrough with 25 citations in its first year. In underwater robotics, Bak has fundamentally advanced hovering control for tilting-thruster vehicles, developing novel switching PD-based sliding mode control and thrust-vector decomposition methods that achieve precise six-degree-of-freedom station-keeping in challenging marine environments. Her work, spanning from back-stepping control design to gain optimization with actuation limit algorithms, has accumulated over 95 citations across her core publications. Notably, Bak also bridges theory and practice through applied work on automating laser welding for liquefied natural gas cargo tanks using mobile manipulators, demonstrating her versatility in solving real-world industrial challenges. Her research provides foundational control frameworks that enable underwater robots to perform complex tasks like inspection and maintenance with unprecedented stability and precision.
