About
Andrea Ranieri is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of marine autonomy, human-robot interaction, and intelligent guidance systems. Best known for contributions to underwater robotics, Ranieri has played a significant role in two landmark European and Italian initiatives — the CADDY project and the MARIS national program — both aimed at developing autonomous robotic systems capable of operating alongside human divers in challenging underwater environments. A centerpiece of this research is the development of a novel gesture-based communication language enabling intuitive diver-robot interaction, work that has collectively attracted nearly 80 citations and demonstrated strong real-world applicability. Ranieri has also advanced vision-based gesture recognition systems validated for safety-critical underwater missions, and contributed to cooperative multi-vehicle guidance strategies for applications ranging from diver support to emergency ship towing.
