About

Rico Moeckel is a pioneering robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of modular robotics, adaptive locomotion, and self-reconfiguring systems. Over more than a decade of prolific research, he has made foundational contributions to how robots composed of interchangeable modules can autonomously learn to move and reconfigure themselves into functional structures. Moeckel is perhaps best known for his role in developing the YaMoR and Roombots modular robot platforms. His 2008 paper on using Central Pattern Generators combined with online optimization to teach modular robots locomotion has accumulated 134 citations and remains a landmark contribution to biologically inspired robot control. His work on Roombots — versatile self-reconfiguring modules capable of assembling into adaptive furniture — has similarly garnered significant attention, with key papers earning over 118 citations. Beyond hardware innovation, Moeckel has advanced the software and control frameworks underpinning these systems, from FPGA-based reconfiguration architectures to decentralized locomotion strategies and gait optimization. His research also extends into human-robot interaction, including user interface design for controlling adaptive robotic furniture. Collectively, his work has helped establish modular robotics as a credible path toward truly adaptable, intelligent physical systems, inspiring researchers across robotics, embedded systems, and human-computer interaction.
