About

Gen Pan is a robotics researcher whose work bridges industrial automation and human-robot collaboration, with a focus on wall-climbing welding robots (WCWRs), humanoid cooking systems, and modular robotic self-diagnosis. Pan’s most impactful contribution is the design of a non-contact adjustable magnetic adhesion mechanism for WCWRs, a breakthrough enabling robots to safely navigate and weld on large unstructured surfaces like ship hulls—directly replacing human workers in hazardous environments. This work, cited 41 times, addresses the critical trade-off between adhesion strength, mobility, and obstacle clearance. Pan further advanced robotic manipulation through dynamic analysis of a dual-arm humanoid cooking robot, modeling its 6-DOF arms with Denavit-Hartenberg conventions to replicate chef-like dexterity in home kitchens. In modular robotics, Pan proposed a fault self-diagnosis strategy using M-Lattice modules, employing bionic-inspired detection and transmission protocols to enable self-configuration and repair—a foundational step toward resilient, autonomous systems. With additional work on optimal motion planning for mobile welding robots, Pan’s research consistently targets real-world deployment, from shipyards to smart kitchens, demonstrating a career dedicated to making robots safer, smarter, and more adaptable.
