Seiga Kiribayashi is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally shaped disaster response robotics, particularly in the aftermath of the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. His research centers on mobile rescue robots, multi-robot collaborative mapping, and autonomous systems for extreme environments. Kiribayashi’s most defining contribution came during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis, where he led the redesign and deployment of the Quince rescue robot for surveillance missions inside the damaged reactor buildings.
