About
Seiga Kiribayashi is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally shaped disaster response robotics, particularly in the aftermath of the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. His research centers on mobile rescue robots, multi-robot collaborative mapping, and autonomous systems for extreme environments. Kiribayashi’s most defining contribution came during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis, where he led the redesign and deployment of the Quince rescue robot for surveillance missions inside the damaged reactor buildings. This work, detailed in his highly cited 2012 paper (601 citations), demonstrated the critical role of robots in nuclear emergency response. He further advanced the field by developing collaborative mapping techniques using teams of ground and aerial robots to create 3D maps of earthquake-damaged structures (379 citations), enabling safer and more efficient search and rescue operations.
