About

Dr. Kaiwei Ma is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of robotics and biomedical engineering, whose work is redefining the boundaries of surgical intervention and automated manufacturing. His primary research areas include robotic-assisted in situ 3D bioprinting, intelligent robotic grinding, and soft robotics for rehabilitation. Dr. Ma’s most significant contribution is the conceptualization and validation of robotic in situ 3D bioprinting for tissue regeneration. His landmark 2020 study on using a robotic system to print HAMA hydrogel directly into cartilage defects (168 citations) and his subsequent work on repairing large segmental bone defects (104 citations) have laid the groundwork for a new era of minimally invasive, patient-specific regenerative medicine. Beyond the operating room, he has made substantial impacts in industrial automation, developing novel path planning methods for robotic belt grinding of complex surfaces (83 citations) and constant-force grinding systems. His versatility extends to soft robotics, where he has designed a pneumatic rehabilitation glove with jamming structures and a magnetically-driven crawling robot. With over 475 total citations, Dr. Ma’s work is characterized by a unique ability to translate complex engineering principles into tangible solutions for both clinical and industrial challenges.
