About
Jane Endicott is a structural biologist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of protein crystallization and high-throughput structural genomics. Her key research areas include macromolecular crystallography, automated crystallization methods, and the structural biology of cell cycle regulation. Endicott made a landmark contribution to the field with her 2003 study, cited over 130 times, which provided the first systematic survey of results from a robotic system for nanolitre-scale vapour-diffusion sitting-drop crystallization. This work demonstrated that 100 nl-scale trials could successfully produce diffraction-quality crystals for a diverse range of over 50 unrelated protein samples, establishing a practical framework that transformed crystallization from a labor-intensive art into a high-throughput, data-driven process. Her findings directly enabled the large-scale structural biology initiatives that followed, accelerating the determination of thousands of protein structures. Beyond this methodological breakthrough, Endicott is recognized for her structural studies of cyclin-dependent kinases and their regulatory complexes, which have provided critical insights into cell cycle control and cancer biology. Her work continues to influence both fundamental biochemistry and drug discovery efforts targeting kinase signaling pathways.
