About

Huanqing Cui is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of soft robotics, bioinspired materials, and smart actuator systems. Drawing inspiration from nature's remarkable adaptive mechanisms, Cui has made transformative contributions to the development of intelligent hydrogel-based actuators and millirobots capable of reconfiguration, camouflage, and dynamic color-shifting. His landmark 2019 study on chameleon-inspired structural-color actuators (288 citations) and his subsequent work on bioinspired adaptive hydrogel millirobots (252 citations) have established him as a leading voice in soft robotics, demonstrating how biological principles can be elegantly translated into functional robotic systems. His innovative "inside-out" 3D reversible ion-triggered shape-morphing hydrogels reflect a sophisticated understanding of anisotropic material behavior, while his reviews on intelligent polymer-based actuators have helped synthesize and advance the broader field. More recently, Cui has pioneered the emerging concept of "Aquabots" — ultrasoft, water-in-water robotic constructs that push the boundaries of navigability in confined spaces — with follow-up work on responsive-hydrogel Aquabots extending this vision further. Spanning tactile sensing, near-infrared-driven nanomotors, and multifunction actuation, Cui's portfolio exemplifies a rare breadth of innovation with lasting impact on next-generation soft robotic technologies.
