About

Hochul Hwang is a robotics researcher whose work spans two compelling and complementary domains: humanoid robot control and assistive robotics for blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals. Early in his career, Hwang made significant contributions to whole-body control of humanoid robots, developing computationally robust and efficient prioritized controllers that incorporate centroidal momentum dynamics and contact constraints — work that has garnered over 40 citations and remains influential in legged robotics research. He also advanced dynamic balancing methodologies for passive-ankled bipeds, addressing the particularly challenging case of locomotion without ankle actuation. More recently, Hwang has pivoted toward socially impactful robotics, leading a research program on guide dog robots designed to support BLV individuals. His work thoughtfully examines real handler-guide dog interactions to inform robot design — a human-centered approach that distinguishes his contributions from prior work in the field. His 2023 and 2024 papers on guide dog robot systems have quickly accumulated nearly 55 citations combined, reflecting the timeliness and relevance of this research direction. His ongoing work on synthetic data augmentation further demonstrates a commitment to building robust, accessible robotic mobility aids. Hwang's research uniquely bridges high-performance robot control with meaningful real-world application.
