Raj Desai is a pioneer in autonomous robotic systems, with a career dedicated to solving the fundamental challenges of machine mobility and manipulation in unstructured environments. His research focuses on behavior-based control, robotic exploration, and uncertainty handling in fine-motion tasks. Desai’s seminal 1994 paper on behavior control for planetary surface exploration (147 citations) demonstrated how small rovers could overcome the crippling communication delays of deep-space teleoperation, laying the groundwork for autonomous navigation on Mars.
