About

Dayao Liang has made pioneering contributions to the field of robotic grasping and manipulation, with a focused research agenda on underactuated, self-adaptive robot hands. His key innovation lies in the development of the PASA (Parallel and Self-Adaptive) hand series, which elegantly bridges the gap between traditional dexterous hands—which offer many grasping modes but are complex and difficult to control—and purely self-adaptive hands, which are simpler but lack the ability to perform precision pinching. Liang’s PASA Hand (2016, 34 citations) introduced a novel gear-link mechanism that enables both parallel pinching and enveloping grasps using fewer actuators, dramatically simplifying control while retaining versatility. His subsequent PASA-GB Hand (2017, 24 citations) refined this approach with gear-belt mechanisms, and his foundational PASA Finger design (2015, 21 citations) established the core principle. Collectively, these works have been widely cited for their practical impact on prosthetic and industrial robotics, offering a compelling solution for adaptive, low-complexity grasping. Liang’s research continues to influence the design of more capable, yet mechanically simple, robot hands.
