About
Carsten Preusche is a prominent robotics researcher whose work spans space robotics, teleoperation, and haptic systems, with particular expertise developed through his long-standing contributions at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). His research has profoundly shaped how robotic systems are designed and deployed in demanding environments, most notably in on-orbit servicing — the challenge of maintaining and repairing satellites in space. His contributions to DLR's space robotics program, documented across multiple highly cited papers (collectively exceeding 700 citations), include the landmark ROKVISS experiment, which successfully demonstrated robotic component verification aboard the International Space Station in 2005. Beyond space applications, Preusche has made significant advances in telerobotics and haptic interfaces, investigating stability boundaries for haptic rendering under delay and damping conditions and developing DLR's bimanual haptic device — enabling precise, human-like remote manipulation. His work in minimally invasive surgical teleoperation further demonstrates the breadth of his translational impact. Through rigorous theoretical frameworks and innovative hardware development, Preusche has consistently bridged fundamental robotics research with real-world applications in medicine, space exploration, and human-robot interaction.
