About

Ruoshi Zhang is a robotics and materials engineering researcher whose work spans two compelling frontiers: flexible tactile sensing for human-robot interaction and laser-driven microrobotics. Zhang's most significant contributions lie in developing cost-effective, functional electronic skins capable of mimicking human tactile perception. Through a progression of works on piezoresistive robotic skin sensors — from strain gauge fabrication to inkjet-printed organic PEDOT:PSS arrays — Zhang has systematically advanced the scalability and reliability of tactile sensing technology for collaborative robots, accumulating over 90 citations across these efforts. Notably, the "fingerprint"-inspired SkinCell sensor design represents an elegant marriage of biomimicry and practical engineering. Equally impressive is Zhang's pioneering work in untethered microrobotics. The ChevBot (19 citations) introduced a novel laser-powered submillimeter robot using thermal MEMS actuation, while the SolarPede (17 citations) demonstrated light-powered legged locomotion at the micro-scale — both targeting microfactory applications. Supporting multiphysics modeling work further demonstrates Zhang's rigorous approach to validating microrobot dynamics. Together, these contributions position Zhang as an innovative voice at the intersection of soft robotics, advanced manufacturing, and microscale autonomous systems.
