About

Nelson Caldwell is a pioneering astronomical instrument builder whose work has fundamentally shaped wide-field spectroscopy at the MMT Observatory. His primary research areas include the design and implementation of multi-object fiber-fed spectrographs, with a focus on enabling high-throughput, high-resolution observations of stellar populations and galactic dynamics. Caldwell’s most significant contribution is the development of Hectospec, a 300 optical fiber-fed spectrograph commissioned in 2004, which revolutionized the MMT’s capabilities by using high-speed robots to reposition fibers in under 300 seconds with remarkable 25-micron accuracy.
