About
Robert Fata is a master instrument builder whose career has been defined by transforming the observational capabilities of the MMT Observatory. His primary research area is astronomical instrumentation, with a singular focus on designing and constructing the robotic systems that feed light into the MMT’s powerful spectrographs. Fata’s most monumental contribution is the development of the Hectospec, a 300-optical-fiber-fed spectrograph that revolutionized the telescope’s efficiency. His high-speed, six-axis robots can reposition all 300 fiber buttons in roughly 300 seconds with an accuracy of 25 microns, a feat of engineering detailed in his most-cited work (382 citations). This robotic positioner is the backbone of the facility, also serving the Hectochelle echelle spectrograph (67 citations).
