S. Tokarz is a key figure in astronomical instrumentation, renowned for developing the fiber-optic systems that power two of the MMT Observatory’s most transformative spectrographs. Their primary contribution is the design and implementation of the high-precision robotic fiber positioner used by both Hectospec and Hectochelle. The Hectospec, a 300-fiber spectrograph commissioned in 2004, revolutionized multi-object spectroscopy by using high-speed robots to reposition fibers to an accuracy of ~25 microns in just 300 seconds.
