About
Joseph Zajac is a leading astronomical instrumentation scientist whose work has revolutionized wide-field spectroscopy at the MMT Observatory. His primary research focus is the design, construction, and deployment of high-throughput, multi-object fiber-fed spectrographs. Zajac’s most significant contribution is the development of the Hectospec, a 300-optical-fiber-fed spectrograph commissioned in 2004. This instrument, detailed in his highly cited 2005 paper (382 citations), uses a pair of high-speed six-axis robots to reposition 300 fiber buttons to an accuracy of ~25 microns in under 300 seconds, dramatically increasing survey efficiency.
