About

Lyndon Bridgwater is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally shaped the future of humanoid robotics for space exploration. His primary research areas span dexterous manipulation, anthropomorphic robotic design, and field robotics for extreme environments. Bridgwater’s most significant contribution is his leadership in developing Robonaut 2 (R2), the first humanoid robot to operate aboard the International Space Station. This highly dexterous, anthropomorphic torso, a collaboration between NASA and General Motors, has garnered over 450 citations and demonstrated how robots can assist astronauts with maintenance tasks. He further advanced the field with Valkyrie, NASA’s first bipedal humanoid, which competed in the DARPA Robotics Challenge and set new standards for disaster-response robotics.
