About
Kyle Strickland is a robotics researcher pushing the boundaries of autonomous systems in extreme environments. His work centers on novel robot design and resilient autonomy for subterranean and unstructured terrains. Strickland’s most recognized contribution is the “Drivocopter” (2020), a concept hybrid aerial/ground vehicle that overcomes the classic trade-off between flight endurance and payload capacity. By combining rotor-based flight with ground driving, this platform promises long-endurance mobility for challenging exploration, a paper that has garnered 56 citations and sparked interest in multi-modal robot locomotion. Strickland is also a key contributor to the NeBula autonomy solution, developed by Team CoSTAR for the DARPA Subterranean Challenge. His 2024 addendum extends NeBula’s hardware, software, and algorithmic framework to larger-scale environments, addressing critical gaps in real-world deployment. This work demonstrates his ability to translate theoretical concepts into robust, field-tested systems. With a growing citation record and a focus on practical, high-impact robotics, Kyle Strickland is shaping the future of autonomous exploration—from underground caves to planetary surfaces.
