Julie Townsend is a pioneering robotics engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, whose work has fundamentally shaped how robots explore and build on other worlds. Her primary research spans planetary mobility systems, in-situ resource utilization, and autonomous robotic manipulation. Townsend is best known as the lead developer of the ATHLETE robot—the All-Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer—a revolutionary six-limbed vehicle that can both drive and walk, enabling it to traverse everything from gentle slopes to extreme rocky terrain.
