About
G. de Saussure is a pioneering robotics researcher whose career has centered on autonomous mobile robot navigation, machine intelligence, and intelligent control systems for unstructured and hazardous environments. Working primarily through Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Center for Engineering Systems Advanced Research (CESAR), de Saussure was a key figure in the development of the landmark HERMIES (Hostile Environment Robotic Machine Intelligence Experiment) series of robots, contributing foundational work from the earliest HERMIES-I prototype in 1984 through increasingly sophisticated iterations. His research tackled some of the most challenging problems in robotics: enabling machines to plan, navigate, learn, and respond to unexpected occurrences in real time without human intervention.
