About
Costanzo Manes is a leading figure in robot control and human–robot interaction, whose career spans foundational contributions to hybrid force-position control and the modeling of robots in contact with dynamic environments. His seminal 1994 paper, “Modeling of robots in contact with a dynamic environment” (75 citations), introduced a control-oriented framework that moved beyond simple kinematic constraints, enabling robots to interact safely and effectively with moving or compliant surroundings. This work, together with his earlier papers on hybrid control (1988, 36 citations; 1991, 38 citations), established a task-space decoupling approach that remains influential in force and velocity regulation. Manes has also advanced practical applications, including on-line contour identification for unknown workpieces and robust sliding-mode control that compensates for model inaccuracies. More recently, he has ventured into collaborative robotics and brain-computer interfaces, as seen in his 2024 work on emotional intelligence for trajectory decision-making (28 citations) and deep learning for EEG-based motor classification. With over 250 total citations across his most-cited papers, Manes’s research continues to shape how robots perceive, adapt to, and cooperate with humans and dynamic environments.
