About
Carlos Almeida is a leading figure in marine robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the autonomous exploration of some of the most challenging environments on Earth. His research focuses on the design, control, and deployment of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) and underwater robots for bathymetric surveying, risk assessment, and resource extraction. Almeida’s major contributions include the pioneering development of the ROAZ and ROAZ II ASVs, which have been instrumental in demonstrating autonomous docking maneuvers with underwater vehicles and casualty detection in field experiments. His work on the UX-1 and EVA hybrid ROV/AUV systems, developed under the EU’s H2020 UNEXMIN and VAMOS! projects, has set new standards for underwater mining exploration and support.
