About

Thomio Watanabe is a leading researcher in autonomous underwater robotics, with a primary focus on the development and deployment of inspection-class autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). His most significant contribution is the design and realization of FlatFish, a compact, subsea-resident AUV engineered for the autonomous inspection of underwater industrial structures, such as oil and gas pipelines and offshore wind farm foundations. This work, published in 2015 and garnering 73 citations, directly addresses the growing need for a constantly available, cost-effective alternative to traditional remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and diver-based inspections. To accelerate the development of such complex systems, Watanabe also pioneered the integration of the Rock framework with the Gazebo simulator, enabling real-time, high-fidelity AUV simulation. This contribution, cited 32 times, allows researchers to test navigation and control algorithms in virtual environments, significantly reducing the time and cost of field trials. Through these efforts, Watanabe has established himself as a key figure in advancing the practical, real-world deployment of autonomous systems for critical subsea infrastructure monitoring.
