About
R. Vijayakumar is a versatile robotics and intelligent systems researcher whose work spans multi-agent robotics, bio-inspired actuation, and computer vision-based quality control. He is perhaps best known for his highly influential 2008 paper on Bézier curve-based path planning in multi-agent robot soccer systems, which garnered an impressive 231 citations and introduced an elegant approach to smooth, acceleration-constrained trajectory generation. Building on this foundation, Vijayakumar has made substantial contributions to intelligent robot decision-making through artificial neural networks and fuzzy neural network frameworks, collectively attracting over 140 additional citations and demonstrating the effectiveness of hybrid AI techniques in dynamic, multi-agent environments. A distinctive thread in his research portfolio is his pioneering work on sub-millimeter shape memory alloy (SMA) helical spring actuators, where he developed novel model-based resistance estimation and sensorless position control strategies — critical advances for biomimetic and medical microrobotics. More recently, he has extended his expertise into applied deep learning, exploring Mask R-CNN architectures for automated automotive scratch detection. Spanning over a decade of innovation, Vijayakumar's research reflects a consistent commitment to intelligent, adaptive systems across scales — from soccer-playing robots to microscale artificial muscles.
