About
N. Cardew is a leading figure in marine robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the coordinated operation of autonomous vehicles for ocean science. His most impactful contribution is the European ASIMOV project, which pioneered the integrated control of an Autonomous Surface Craft (ASC) with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). This seminal work, detailed in his highly cited 2002 paper (141 citations), solved the critical challenge of maintaining a fast, reliable communication link between the two vehicles, enabling real-time data relay and adaptive mission planning. By creating a system where the surface vehicle acts as a mobile gateway, Cardew effectively untethered the AUV from a support ship, dramatically expanding its operational range and endurance. This foundational research has become a cornerstone for modern multi-vehicle oceanographic surveys, directly influencing subsequent developments in persistent environmental monitoring and subsea exploration. Cardew’s achievements have established a new paradigm for robotic cooperation in the challenging marine environment, making him a pivotal figure in the field of autonomous marine systems.
