About

Da-Peng Zhang is a pioneering roboticist whose work bridges soft robotics and assistive healthcare technologies. His research centers on developing innovative sensing systems for soft robots and creating advanced nursing-care robots to address societal aging challenges. Zhang’s most impactful contribution is the invention of an inductive strain sensor with ultra-low hysteresis and high repeatability, based on a mechanical spring design. This breakthrough overcomes limitations of traditional resistance- and capacitance-based soft sensors, enabling soft manipulators and locomotion robots to accurately perceive their body morphology—a critical step toward more adaptive and autonomous soft robotic systems. His work on the ROBEAR nursing-care assistant robot, designed for patient transfer and standing assistance, showcases his commitment to translating robotics into real-world caregiving solutions. ROBEAR’s human-type arms demonstrate Zhang’s expertise in developing high-functionality, safe robotic systems for direct human interaction. Additionally, his early research on vascular interventional robots, employing master-slave control and image navigation, highlights his foundational contributions to medical robotics. With papers accumulating citations across these domains, Zhang’s work has influenced both the fundamental science of soft sensing and the practical development of robots that enhance human well-being, making him a notable figure in contemporary robotics research.
