About
Zhongfeng Qian is a robotics researcher whose work bridges autonomous manipulation and soft robotic actuation. His most impactful contribution is the DoraPicker system (2016), an autonomous picking platform designed for general objects in warehouse environments. With 31 citations, this work addresses a critical bottleneck in e-commerce logistics by enabling robots to both pick and place diverse items without task-specific programming. Qian’s research has since evolved into soft robotics, where he has developed innovative pneumatic actuation systems. His 2025 study on single pump-valve pneumatic actuation introduces continuous flow rate control for soft robots, overcoming the limitations of bulky, multi-component pneumatic setups. More recently, Qian has tackled the challenge of mechanoreception in soft robots, proposing a multi-channel optical sensing method that leverages ambient and infrared light (2024). This work enables compliant robots to perceive their own state and surroundings—a key step toward feedback control in unstructured environments.
