About
Yande Cui is pioneering the next generation of soft robotics through the design of intelligent, stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators and artificial muscles. Her research focuses on harnessing ionic coordination and hydration programming to create materials that can mimic the complex, antagonistic movements of human skeletal muscles. In her highly cited 2022 work (39 citations), she introduced a temperature-driven gradient hydrogel actuator with rapid responsiveness, strengthened by ionic coordination. Cui’s 2024 paper (22 citations) advanced the field by developing shape-memorable artificial muscles capable of programmable deformations, overcoming the modulus limitations of traditional shape memory polymers. Most recently, in 2025 (18 citations), she engineered untethered, temperature-triggered inflatable hydrogel muscles that utilize snap-through instability, eliminating the need for bulky compressors. Her comprehensive 2023 mini-review (11 citations) on nanocellulose-based soft actuators further underscores her role in advancing sustainable, mechanically robust materials. With a growing citation record and a clear trajectory toward miniaturized, autonomous soft robots, Yande Cui is establishing herself as a key innovator in bioinspired actuation and smart materials.
