About

Tien Dat Nguyen is a pioneering researcher in soft robotics and tactile sensing, whose work bridges the gap between biomimetic actuation and intelligent robotic perception. His most impactful contributions center on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), where he developed synthetic elastomer materials based on acrylonitrile butadiene rubber to create multistacked actuators for small-scale robots. His highly cited works include a multiple-degrees-of-freedom DEA-driven hexapod robot (112 citations) and a biomimetic quadruped robot (102 citations), demonstrating unprecedented miniaturization and flexibility in soft robotic locomotion. Nguyen has also made significant advances in proximity and tactile sensing, introducing skin-type dual proximity sensors and highly sensitive arrays using carbon micro coils, with applications in human-collaborative robots. His six-axis capacitive force/torque sensor based on dielectric elastomer (35 citations) addresses the critical challenge of cost in robotic force sensing. With over 350 total citations across his portfolio, Nguyen’s work is foundational for the next generation of soft, safe, and perceptive robots that can interact closely with humans and navigate complex environments.
