Stephen A. Sarles is a leading researcher in bio-inspired robotics and functional soft materials, with a focus on creating lifelike systems that bridge biology and engineering. His most celebrated contribution is the development of a biomimetic jellyfish-inspired underwater vehicle, actuated by ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs), which replicate the flexible, efficient propulsion of real jellyfish like *Aequorea victoria* and *Aurelia aurita*.
