About
Silvio Maeta is a pioneer in agricultural and aerial robotics, whose work bridges the gap between autonomous systems and real-world deployment. His research centers on perception, navigation, and control for robotic vehicles operating in unstructured outdoor environments. Maeta’s most influential contribution is the development of GPS-free perception and navigation systems for autonomous orchard vehicles, enabling safe and reliable operation in modern tree fruit production. This work, published in 2015, has garnered over 110 citations and represents a significant step toward practical “robot farmers.” Earlier in his career, Maeta was instrumental in Project AURORA, where he helped achieve one of the first successful autonomous flights of a robotic unmanned airship. His work on modeling, control, and internet-based solutions for aerial robots, including a pioneering VRML/Java airship simulator, laid critical groundwork for remote operation and safety in unmanned aerial systems. With a career spanning ground and aerial platforms, Maeta has consistently advanced the frontier of autonomous outdoor robotics, making his research essential reading for students and engineers working on field robots, precision agriculture, and autonomous aerial vehicles.
