About
Luiz G. B. Mirisola is a robotics researcher whose work spans autonomous aerial systems, vision-based robot control, and mobile robotics perception. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contributions to Project AURORA, a pioneering initiative aimed at developing unmanned robotic airships capable of fully autonomous flight. His 2002 paper reporting one of the first successful autonomous airship flights over pre-defined waypoints garnered 29 citations and remains a landmark in unmanned aerial vehicle research. Alongside this, Mirisola contributed critical work on airship modelling and control, Internet-based remote operation frameworks, and one of the earliest Internet-accessible airship simulation environments built on VRML and Java, each accumulating nearly 20 citations. Beyond aerial robotics, Mirisola has made significant contributions to visual servo control, developing decoupled intensity-based nonmetric approaches that enhance accuracy, versatility, and robustness in image-guided robot control — work that has continued evolving through publications as recent as 2024. His research in 3D map registration combining vision, laser, and inertial sensing further demonstrates his breadth across perception and navigation. With a career spanning over two decades and contributions touching autonomous systems, simulation, and advanced visual control, Mirisola represents a consistent and versatile voice in the robotics research community.
