Paul L. D. Roberts is a marine roboticist and ocean technologist whose research sits at the intersection of autonomous underwater systems, biological oceanography, and machine learning. His pioneering work has transformed how scientists observe and sample the ocean's most dynamic and inaccessible environments. Roberts is perhaps best known for developing the Mini-Autonomous Underwater Explorers (M-AUEs), a swarm of miniature robotic drifters designed to simultaneously sample complex submesoscale ocean dynamics in three dimensions — a landmark 2017 contribution that has garnered over 177 citations and reshaped thinking about distributed ocean sensing.
