About

Niklas Dahlquist is pioneering the use of autonomous aerial systems in some of the most hazardous environments on Earth: underground mines. His research focuses on multi-agent coordination, autonomous navigation in GNSS-denied environments, and robotic safety inspection. Dahlquist’s most impactful contribution is the first-ever fully autonomous UAV mission to measure gas levels shortly after a real underground blast—a breakthrough that demonstrated the viability of replacing human inspectors in life-threatening post-blast conditions. This work, published in 2024 and 2025, has already garnered over 7 citations. He also developed a decentralized behavior-tree-based architecture for multi-agent task allocation in dynamic industrial settings, and contributed to a multimodal dataset for frontier exploration in harsh subterranean environments with aerosol particles.
