About

Masayuki Tanaka is a pioneering roboticist whose work bridges the gap between construction automation and multi-robot communication. His primary research areas include dual-arm construction robotics, remote-controlled heavy machinery, and emergent communication systems for autonomous agents. Tanaka’s most impactful contribution is the development of a dual-arm construction robot with remote-control functionality (2019, 18 citations), a system designed to perform complex construction tasks in hazardous environments—such as disaster sites—while keeping human operators safely at a distance. This work was part of Japan’s prestigious ImPACT Tough Robotics Challenge (TRC) program, a national initiative that brought together leading researchers from Osaka University, Kobe University, Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, and Tokyo Institute of Technology to create robots capable of operating in extreme conditions. Earlier in his career, Tanaka explored the foundations of swarm intelligence with his study on communication emergence among mobile robots (2002, 4 citations), where he simulated how robots could transmit intentions to one another—a concept that underpins modern collaborative autonomous systems. Though his citation counts are modest, Tanaka’s contributions are notable for their practical focus on real-world deployment, particularly in construction and disaster response, where his remote-control and dual-arm designs have influenced subsequent work in human-robot collaboration and field robotics.
