About
Jinhua Xiong is pioneering the next generation of soft robotics by drawing inspiration directly from nature. Her research focuses on developing bio-inspired, stimuli-responsive materials and entirely biodegradable soft actuators. A key contribution is the creation of high-performance anisotropic hydrogels using Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene and PNIPAM, which respond to near-infrared light for precise, remote-controlled actuation—work that has garnered over 100 citations. She has also advanced the field by engineering multistimuli-responsive actuators from natural materials, enabling programmable, untethered soft robots that are fully biodegradable, addressing critical environmental concerns associated with nonrenewable resources. Her innovative use of biobased inks, such as those derived from cuttlefish ink and cellulose nanofibers, allows for scalable, eco-friendly patterned actuators. Notably, Xiong has developed a snake-inspired soft robot capable of multimodal locomotion and grasping, and a self-sensing photoactuator using MXene/graphite composite ink for object recognition. With a growing body of highly cited work, Xiong is establishing herself as a leading voice in sustainable, biomimetic soft robotics.
