About

Xiaodong He is a pioneering researcher at the forefront of smart materials, soft robotics, and bio-inspired actuator systems. His work spans stimuli-responsive hydrogels, MXene-based composites, shape-memory polymers, and carbon nanotube architectures, with a unifying focus on creating intelligent, adaptive materials that mimic biological motion and function. He has made landmark contributions to the development of untethered soft actuators capable of responding to light, heat, and electrical stimuli, including a celebrated insect larvae-inspired MXene jumping actuator (88 citations) and bio-inspired Ti₃C₂Tₓ/PNIPAM anisotropic hydrogels for NIR-responsive systems (103 citations). His pioneering work on 3D conductive shape-memory polymer nanocomposites (94 citations) established new benchmarks for electroactive soft robotics. He has increasingly championed sustainability, developing entirely biodegradable soft robots from natural materials (80 citations) and biobased cuttlefish ink actuators. His more recent research into skin-mimicking multifunctional hydrogels and phototropic self-oscillating MXene actuators signals a bold push toward bionic robotics. With over 550 cumulative citations across a decade of impactful publications, He stands as a transformative voice shaping the future of intelligent soft matter systems.
