D. Lorenzetti is an observational astrophysicist whose career has centered on the design, construction, and scientific exploitation of robotic telescopes for time-domain astronomy, with a particular focus on the near-infrared (NIR) regime. His primary research areas include the prompt emission and early afterglow of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), multi-wavelength astrophysics, and the development of robotic observing facilities. Lorenzetti’s most significant contribution is his leadership in the REM (Rapid Eye Mount) project, a moderate-aperture robotic telescope at La Silla, Chile, uniquely capable of simultaneous visible-to-NIR (0.45–2.3 microns) observations. This facility, detailed in his 2004 paper (12 citations), was a pioneering tool for catching the elusive prompt optical continuum of GRBs. His foundational 2001 work (81 citations) established the scientific case for REM, arguing that NIR monitoring is critical for observing high-redshift, Ly-α absorbed bursts and probing early universe cosmology.
